Healthy Eating

Manor Lodge Community Primary School believes it has a duty to promote awareness of healthy eating and regular exercise to all people in our school community now and in the future. In order to promote health and fitness we run a Breakfast Club and a Fruit Tuck Shop at break time where pupils are encouraged to make healthy choices. Other areas of the curriculum reinforce these ideals with Science, PSHE and Citizenship, P.E. and a Healthy Living Week backing up this work.

It is our collective aim to reward pupil success and good behaviour consistently with use of suitable rewards in line with our whole school aims, however this will be achieved through the use of sports tickets, gift vouchers, fruit vouchers or other non-edible treats in line with School Behaviour Policy. It would be against our school aims to promote a healthy environment in which to work if the use of high fat, high sugar or high salt content snacks were used in this way.

The following aims are ones we will endeavour to use in order to promote a healthy environment here at Manor Lodge Community Primary School.

- Staff should not use sweets/chocolates/biscuits/crisps/carbonated drinks/fatty foods etc as rewards for pupils.

- The routine use of unhealthy food for birthday, end of term and other celebrations would be inappropriate and against our whole school aim. Teachers should use their professional judgement in this matter.

- Pupils may be given some of the above in a controlled manner as part of school curriculum work on religious festivals and celebrations that may include Christmas, Eid etc

- Educational visits where pupils will be buying snacks for themselves should be monitored by staff and guidance offered to them on their choice of healthy snacks.

- The school will encourage children to bring a drinking bottle into school so that they can easily access the drinking water that is made available at the water cooler.

- The school will ensure that parents/carers are aware that school dinners reflect the healthy eating aims of the school and Sheffield CYPD.

- Parents/carers should be informed on healthy eating options and be encouraged to provide healthy eating lunchboxes and snacks.

- The school will make available a piece of fruit or vegetable each day for each pupil, provided free to Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 pupils as part of the Government?s 5-a-day scheme, and at minimal cost to Key Stage 2 pupils through the Fruit Tuck Shop.

- Healthy options will be provided at the Breakfast Club and children will be encouraged to choose them.

- Ongoing education will be provided to all members of our school community and outside agencies will be used effectively to ensure maximum impact.

Manor Lodge Community Primary School uses a number of outside agencies to provide support for the Healthy Eating Policy and expects all staff to work towards educating and improving the immediate and future health of its pupils.

This policy will be reviewed and evaluated annually in order to give maximum benefit.
